TG #5: Listener Feedback and a few Small Gadgets

January 18, 2008 – 9:03 am

This week on Tweak and Geek, we respond to reader feedback and discuss some smaller gadgets that could be purchased with one of those random unexpected windfalls.

0) Errata

  • T&G#4 Schroedinger’s Cat 20:12 – I said that the cat and the atom device are in a transparent box. That actually should have been an opaque box. This was brought to my attention by my Social Worker cousin Lynn. I got her to read the book Alice in Quantumland a few years ago, and she knows about as much about QM as anybody. I highly recommend that book… if we can get a Social Worker to pick out errata in a Quantum Mechanics Discussion, then we are doing a great job…
  • “IM IN UR ____ ___ING UR _____” is based on a classic Starcraft game. The original phrase was “IM IN UR BASE KILLING ALL UR DOODZ”

Wired ran a “IN UR ___” Geekipedia page. Our favorite was “Im in ur quantum box…. maybe.” Or the top-rated one, “I’m in ur mom, making ur siblingz.”

1) Listener Email

  • Ken’s Email about buying a new PC

Long time listener, first time caller.

I am considering buying a new computer and I was wondering at what point do you
decide that you can’t live with your last one and that you have to have a new

Once you’ve made that decision, do you build your own piece by piece or do you
buy a fully built computer system?

  • Megan’s Email About CD Digitization

The glory days of jewel cases are over; I want to digitize my CD collection.
What’s the best strategy and software to use? Keeping in mind that you,
Craig, have made me covetous of an iPod Touch.

  • Nate’s email about Blu Ray

Warner Backs Blu-ray, Tilting DVD Battle

I read this article today which is about how Warner Bros is now going to use
only Blu-Ray which means that Blu-ray will be the leading High Def DVD
I was wondering what you guys thought about this?

Is Blu-Ray really the superior format or has HD DVD just lost out.
It seems like Blue-Ray is a lot more expensive.

    • Several studios have been exercising “out” clauses in HD-DVD contracts — focus may be shifting to Blu-Ray
    • HD-DVD far from dead yet — still has MS behind it

2) What Consumer Electronics to buy with a windfall – the T&G buyer’s guide

  • Noise Canceling Headphones
  • Digital Camera
  • Nintendo DS
  • GPS
  • PC paraphernalia:
  • Wii

3) Talk about WorldIV Gameblog Interviews

  2. Good show. Keep it up!

I have a recommendation for the GPS. I got a TomTom One XL S for Christmas (

Comes with a car mount, but also works great out of the car. I have even used it for geocacheing with it. Might be a bit more $ than you were discussing was well worth it.

Although since I have one, I will be looking at getting the shuttle pro you discussed.

  3. Oh. And thanks for the shout out!

  4. Great show as always, keep up the great work and effort!

I completely agree with your comments on buying vs. building a PC. Back in the day, you could save a lot of money building your own system, but now there’s little to no savings to be had in going that route. Plus, you lose out on the benefit of a warranty. I’d only recommend building a system to someone who would enjoy the process (because it can be really rewarding).

Looking forward to the next podcast!

  5. You mentioned some code to the following effect:

    while (!success)

Maybe they should add a catch block to handle life’s exceptions…

  6. Just as long as I don’t have to code the finally{} block just yet….

  7. Enjoying the shows. Finally! A good reason to use my iPod. Btw, the Smag comment almost made me choke on my poptart.

  8. I’m glad you didn’t actually choke. It would be a shame to kill a double-digit percentage of our listeners in one fell swoop.
