TG #14: Election Parties, Gameboy Fail, and NULL

November 2, 2008 – 11:43 pm

This episode of Tweak and Geek will keep you riveted to your seats, with exciting stuff like a how-to on throwing an election party, the saga of Pat’s dead Gameboy Advance, and SQL NULL!

Election Night, Party Time!
Is anyone having an election night party? What are some good ways to celebrate?

  1. Elephant and Donkey steaks
  2. Sit R-D-R-D-R-D…
  3. Drink a beer every time a state goes blue, a martini every time a state goes red (or vice-versa)

OMG A Bug in Windows!

Microsoft Windows Security Breach KB958644 – Definitely shook things up around Craig’s office, being an IT shop! Vulnerability in “Server” service (file and print sharing) could allow remote code execution. Only authenticated users are allowed in Vista, which minimized the impact. This is a really significant issue for all older Windows verisons. Sadly, not sexy though.

A good summary of articles is at

NULL is this weird value in SQL that means “I don’t know what the value is.” It’s tricky to work with if you’re not careful, and can easily be the source of problems.

Craig wrote a poem!

Roses are red
Violets are dull
My love for you
Is equal to NULL

Tweak and Geek – the debate rages on!

Which one of us is Tweak and which is Geek? Or is it a couple of verbs? Write in with your suggestions, and we’ll pick the ones that amuse us the most to become the official explanation.

  2. Ok… so lots of love for the new listeners..but no love for the one’s that have endured y’all from the beginning. WTF?

But this was a good podcast, thanks for the story about the GameBoy Fail.

Election Parties! I am headed to one tommorow..(not Thursday). We plan to play cards, drink beer, and yell things at the TV. Not as clever the red/blue beer/martini game, but it promises to be a decent way to watch the results.

  3. In addition to ShadesOfGrey’s comment above, it’s not very fair that you ask for us to guess who is Tweak and who is Geek and then waste the best answer of all! Speaking of which, I understood the fundamentals of quantum mechanics before this podcast even existed! Other than those egregious (another word for Craig’s Twitter account, perhaps?) transgressions, no complaints. Whoever did that Yoda impression at the beginning did a great job, by the way…

  4. Tons of love for our loyal fan base… it’s implied though… like the “you” in the sentence, “Get me another beer!”.

Yes, that was one mighty fine Yoda… I guess Pat and I have fear, anger and hate, which has all led up to this.

    Here’s my guess:
    Michael Swindler=Geek

    Am I close?

  5. I’ve been called many things, most of them deserved, but never Tweak. And since I am still not sure what it means… I’ll take it!

  6. I’ve been called many things, and most if them ended in “geek”. Looks like you nailed it Craig. Now stop doppleganging (is that a real word?) our podcast! ShadesOfGrey and I have tech to talk about and people to berate…

Nifty Article that might interest the T&G faithful.
