TG #6: TG Tech and Filthy Rumors

February 18, 2008 – 12:05 am

Pat will admit it — he’s a big fat slacker, and this episode was recorded OVER A WEEK AGO! Please bear with some of our speculations that have turned out differently in the meantime… This week on Tweak and Geek, we take a tour “backstage” at the Tweak and Geek compound and talk about how we produce this award-winning podcast. Then, we talk about some corporate rumors involving the big “M”. And of course you will get your weekly fill of Guam… all right here on T&G! – High Speed Internet in Guam! Here’s the technology of Tweak and Geek:

  • Headsets
    • Pat uses Logitech, Craig uses Plantronics .Audio 550 DSP (Kevin, you know all about DSP)
  • Skype
    • Here is an interesting blog entry about the whole Skype /Supernode thing
  • Audacity
  • Levellator
  • LAME
  • WordPress
  • PodPress
  • iTunes

Apple’s press release on the new iPod Touch and iPhone Models:

  • M$ offers to Buy Yahoo! – Google throws self off bridge in despair.
    • (We’re late to get this edited! Yahoo! wants more money.)
  • nVidia/Ageia (including Intel/Havok)
    • (Late on this too! nVidia plans to release PhysX technology as an update for the 8000 series cards.)
  • Time Warner experiments with tiered internet pricing. Good? Bad? You decide!
  • Pat to sell for $15,000, and Craig to go back to the breadline for his $0 blog (

Q: Why Podcast?
A: You make lots of money and meet lots of hot women. (Not really – it’s fun).

A podcast we can both agree on :

We’re pretty partial to the TWiT (This Week in Tech) podcasts:

  2. Yet another good podcast guys.

    FWIW, podcasts I like:
    Game Theory
    PC Gamer
    Maximum PC
    Matt’s Today in History
    The History of Rome
….and of course… Tweak and Geek.

On another topic, the PhysX cards. I’m still on the fence on this one. I mean Direct X 10 & 10.1 have been out for a while and there is only 1 big game title Crysis, that makes any use of it. I guess that the developers are waiting for a bigger install base before really taking advantage of, but I’m waiting for more games that use it first. A chicken and egg situation for sure. I would like to see the PhysX just kick in to help off load stuff from the GPU & CPU and give you better FPS even if the game has not been specifically designed for it.

That type of approach would make it a much more tempting purchase.

  3. Remember, the UT3 engine supports PhysX, so we could see a LOT of games in the near future that bother with support… especially if 8-series nVidia cards will support at least some of it!

  4. That’s true. I had forgotten that the UT3 engine supports PhysX. That should make it much easier for developers to utilize.

    I guess time will tell….

  5. Hey Guys,

Excellent as usual. I quite enjoyed the tool-chain description Pat gave of how the podcast is put together.

    Keep it up!
